Senate Bill 325 Relating to Fire Protection Sprinkler and Suppression Contractors Passes Senate

ATLANTA (February 20, 2014) |   The Georgia State Senate passed Senate Bill 325 today by a vote of 49 to 2. SB 325, sponsored by Sen. John Albers (R-Roswell), will strengthen provisions regulating fire protection sprinkler and suppression contractors.

“I am pleased with the passage of Senate Bill 325,” said Sen. Albers. “This bill is good for business and will ensure the integrity and professionalism of fire contractors throughout our state.”

Senate Bill 325 clarifies the process for regulating fire protection sprinkler contractors and fire suppression contractors that operate in Georgia. Under this legislation, contractors that violate laws may be denied an application for a license, certificate or permit.

Prior to subjecting any person or entity to a fine, the Insurance Commissioner must give written notice by hand delivery or by registered or certified mail of the existence of violations. This legislation provides businesses with the opportunity to fix any deficiencies without penalty; however, after a reasonable amount of time, a cease and desist order may be issued.

Under current law, a third and subsequent violation results in a fine ranging from $2,000 to $5,000 for each day a violation persists. This legislation imposes a one-time fine between $2,000 and $5,000.

Senate Bill 325 will now travel to the House of Representatives for consideration.
