ATLANTA (February 7, 2019) | Sen. Zahra Karinshak (D – Duluth) issued the following statement on Senate Bill 58:
“I am proud that my first piece of legislation focuses on protecting the very taxpayers that elected me to represent them.
As an attorney, I understand the important role the legal system can play in promoting transparency and exposing corruption, and that is why my legislation – Senate Bill 58 – offers common-sense protections for those seeking recourse for fraud.
The ability to bring false claims lawsuits is critical in our fight to prevent fraud and protect taxpayer dollars. In instances where the government decides not to pursue such lawsuits, it is vital that the whistleblowers be free to continue the lawsuits and that they are provided the necessary resources to be successful.
My legislation protects whistleblowers by making it easier for them to succeed in their pursuit of justice, encouraging greater accountability for those that attempt to steal from taxpayers.”
