ATLANTA (October 5, 2015) | Sen. Vincent Fort (D- Atlanta) has released the following statement on the Trans-Pacific Partnership Trade Deal (TPP), after requesting a strongly worded resolution from the Atlanta City Council encouraging the United States’ Congress to vote against the agreement:
“Today, I went before the Atlanta City Council to request a resolution calling on Congress, in no uncertain terms, to vote against the Trans-Pacific Partnership deal in its current form. I remain gravely concerned that this deal would lower wages, increase income mobility and inequality, and decimate jobs in Atlanta’s neighborhoods.
If enacted, this deal, much like the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), will disproportionally affect many inner city Atlanta neighborhoods who continue to struggle with high unemployment rates. It is my hope that elected officials in Washington will reject the current deal and find a suitable solution that advances our interests in the Asia-Pacific region while protecting working families in America.
Global trade deals like NAFTA and the proposed TPP make neighborhoods weaker and susceptible to gentrification.”
