ATLANTA (Nov. 9, 2009) – State Senator Ed Tarver (D – Augusta) announced his resignation from the Georgia State Senate, effective 12 noon on November 9. On November 6, the full United States Senate confirmed Sen. Tarver to become the next United States Attorney for the Southern District of Georgia.
“I am honored and grateful to have this opportunity to serve the people of Georgia and the United States” said Sen. Tarver. “I offer my unfailing gratitude to those I represented. I pray that they understand my decision to depart before the end of my term to accept this opportunity to do a greater good. I look forward to serving the people of Georgia and the United States in this new capacity.”
Sen. Tarver, a partner with the Augusta law firm of Hull, Towill, Norman, Barrett & Salley, P.C., was nominated on September 17 by President Barack Obama, who must now formally appoint Sen. Tarver so that he can begin work. Due to the nature of his new post, Sen. Tarver is not able to continue as an elected official serving in the state legislature or as a partner in his private law firm. Sen. Tarver’s resignations from the State Senate and his law firm clear the way for the President to sign the Commission formally appointing Sen. Tarver as United States Attorney.
The United States Attorney for the Southern District of Georgia is one of 93 in the United States. The office represents the United States in 43 counties and is divided into six divisions: Savannah, Augusta, Brunswick, Waycross, Dublin and Statesboro. The United States Attorney is the chief federal law enforcement officer of the United States within his or her jurisdiction.
Sen. Tarver serves on the Attorney Advisory Committee for the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Georgia and is a member of the State Bar of Georgia. He is the recipient of the 2008 Augusta NAACP President’s Award. Sen. Tarver was elected to the Senate in 2005. He resides in Augusta with his wife Beverly (the former Beverly Myers). Sen. Tarver and his wife are the parents of two children – Edward Jr. (“Eddie”) and Beverly Elizabeth.
Sen. Ed Tarver represents the 22nd Senate District which includes Richmond County. He may be reached at 404.656.0340 or via e-mail at ed.tarver@senate.ga.gov.
