Sen. Staton Honors Wesleyan College

ATLANTA (March 1, 2012) –Sen. Cecil Staton (R-Macon) presented Wesleyan College with Senate Resolution 797 in the Senate Chamber on Wednesday, commemorating their 175th Anniversary and the schools continued tradition of academic excellence. February 29, 2012, was also recognized as “Macon Day” at the State Capitol.

“It was an honor to recognize Wesleyan College on their prestigious legacy in educating women,” said Sen. Staton. “Since its inception, Wesleyan College has educated some of Georgia’s best and brightest women and is one of middle Georgia’s finest institutions of higher learning.”

Sen. Staton presented the resolution to Wesleyan President Ruth Knox. President Knox was joined by College Dean Vivia Fowler, Dean of Students Patty Gibbs and Student Government Association President Kendal Binion.

“Wesleyan College appreciates the Georgia Senate’s recognition of Wesleyan’s unique role in women’s education,” said Ruth Knox, President of Wesleyan College. “We have every intention of continuing to be first for women for the next 175 years and beyond – and of continuing to bring honor to Georgia through the contributions of our exemplary students, faculty, staff, and alumnae.  We are so very proud to be located in the heart of the great State of Georgia and are thankful for Sen. Staton’s work on behalf of promoting high quality higher education in our state.”

Located in Macon, Wesleyan was founded on December 23, 1836, and is the first college in the world to grant degrees to women –84 years before women were allowed to vote. In addition, Wesleyan College is continually recognized as one of the nation’s finest liberal arts college’s and is known for academic excellence, affordability, diversity, service learning, community leadership and its unique international student population.

Wesleyan College celebrated their 175th Anniversary on December 23, 2011.
