ATLANTA – (January 13, 2009) State Senator Preston Smith (R-Rome) has been reappointed by Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle to chair the Senate Judiciary Committee, a position he has held since 2005. The Lt. Governor also granted Sen. Smith’s request to serve on the powerful Rules Committee for the 2009-2010 legislative term. The Rules Committee is responsible for determining which bills will be scheduled for a vote by the full Senate.
“I am honored that Lieutenant Governor Cagle has appointed me to serve on the prestigious Rules Committee,” Smith said. “I also look forward to continuing to lead the Judiciary Committee and am confident that we will pass effective legislation to improve the judicial functions in our state.”
Additionally, Sen. Smith will serve as chairman of the Judiciary Subcommittee for Appropriations and as chairman of the Public Defenders’ Legislative Oversight Committee, which oversees the indigent defense system. Sen. Smith is also a member of the Health and Human Services Committee, Redistricting and Reapportionment Committee and Legislative Services Committee.
