ATLANTA (June 12, 2009) – Sen. Preston Smith (R-Rome) yesterday joined the Patriot Guard Riders of Georgia to escort fallen soldier Sgt. Jeffrey W. Jordan of Rome from the Richard B. Russell Airport to the funeral home in preparation for burial. Jordan, 21, died June 4 near Kapisa, Afghanistan, while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

“Sergeant Jordan fought and died for the freedom and liberty of every American. We are indebted to his sacrifice and the sacrifice of his family,” said Smith. “It is overwhelming to see the hundreds of people in the community who have come here today to honor this soldier and his family. I am honored to join the Patriot Guard Riders in leading this brave soldier to his final resting place.”

Jordan was a member of the 48th Infantry Brigade Combat Team of the Georgia Army National Guard. He joined the Guard in 2006, and was assigned to the Surveillance and Target Acquisition Squadron in Afghanistan. Jordan died of wounds sustained from an improvised explosive device and small arms fire. Two other members of Jordan’s unit also died. They were Maj. Kevin M. Jenrette, 37, of Lula, and Staff Sgt. John C. Beale, 39, of Riverdale.

As a civilian, Jordan worked for the Floyd Country Prison. He is survived by his wife and son.

The Patriot Guard Riders of Georgia is part of a national non-profit organization dedicated to attending the funeral services of fallen American heroes. Members include riders from across the nation who share a common respect for those who risk their lives for America’s freedom and security.
