Sen. Seay Advocates for Cancer Research in Georgia

ATLANTA (January 13, 2012) – Sen. Valencia Seay (D-Riverdale) reminds Georgians to give back by participating in the state income tax check-off program to fund cancer research.

“I’ve been a long-time advocate for healthcare awareness, being a heart attack survivor myself,” Sen. Seay said. “I understand the importance that research dollars can do to save lives of Georgians, like you and me. I encourage the people of this great state to give whatever is in their capacity to fund research that starts and ends in Georgia.”

The program works in conjunction with the filing of Georgia income tax return forms, and most online tax preparation software offers citizens the opportunity to be a Samaritan.  An extra line is provided in filing forms to contribute a dollar or more to the Georgia Cancer Research Coalition.  This donation is tax deductable and is matched dollar-for-dollar by research facilities in Georgia.

Those dollars will go to help more than 35,000 Georgians, who will be diagnosed with cancer this year.  Programs like Georgia’s tax check-off ensures that research dollars are staying in Georgia to help our own recover.  Breast cancer, prostate cancer and ovarian cancer research was the first area of focus when legislation implemented the check-off program.  Since 2009, the scope has widened to include all forms of cancer research and prevention.
