ATLANTA (Oct. 8, 2009) – Sen. Mitch Seabaugh (R-Sharpsburg) has been named Vice Chair of the National Conference of State Legislatures’ (NCSL) Budgets and Revenue Standing Committee. Georgia Senator and NCSL President Don Balfour made the appointment. Seabaugh’s appointment now makes the sixth Georgia legislator in a national leadership role with NCSL.
“I am honored to have this opportunity to forge policies and communicate with Washington about ways to lighten the burden on the taxpayer,” Sen. Seabaugh said about his new appointment. “Georgia has decreased the size of state government through budget cuts and increased efficiency, and I hope the federal government can be urged to follow our lead on this.”
The Budgets and Revenue Standing Committee is one of 12 standing committees of the National Conference of State Legislatures. The standing committees are responsible for developing policies that guide NCSL’s activities on Capitol Hill and within the administration. The policies stress three themes: opposition to unfunded federal mandates, prevention of unnecessary preemption of state laws and protection of state revenue sources.
The Budgets and Revenue Committee considers critical fiscal topics in state policy and in federal-state relations. Committee officers set agendas and plan committee programs and activities, develop committee work products, moderate panels of speakers, and represent NCSL before Congress and the Administration.
“Sen. Seabaugh brings a great deal of knowledge and experience to the table,” said Senator Don Balfour. “I am pleased that he has accepted the appointment and I look forward to his valuable contributions to state public policy over the next year.”
NCSL has just completed an active year in representing the interests of the states in Washington, D.C. including work on REAL ID, welfare, education, Medicaid, pensions and electronic commerce, among other issues.
The National Conference of State Legislatures is a bipartisan organization that serves the legislators and staffs of the states, commonwealths and territories. NCSL provides research, technical assistance and opportunities for policymakers to exchange ideas on the most pressing state issues and is an effective and respected advocate for the interests of the states in the American federal system.
Sen. Mitch Seabaugh serves as Senate Majority Whip. He represents the 28th Senate District which includes Coweta and Heard counties and portions of Carroll and Troup counties. He may be reached by phone at 404.656.6446 or by e-mail at mail@mitchseabaugh.com.
