Sen. P.K. Martin Named Policy Maker of the Year

ATLANTA (July 24, 2019)  | On Monday, July 16th, Sen. P.K. Martin (R – Lawrenceville) was named Policy Maker of the Year by the Georgia Association of Career and Technical Educators (GACTE) for his work as Chairman of the Senate Education and Youth Committee

“I was truly honored to receive the Policy Maker of the Year Award from the Georgia Association of Career and Technical Educators,” said Sen. Martin. “In my years of working at the state capitol, I’ve had a number of legislative successes, but none are as rewarding as those passed that help our students receive a quality education. I dedicated my award to all the CTE teachers that work every day in the classroom and deserve the credit for helping children prepare themselves to reach out for their dreams.”

“I join with GACTE in congratulating Senator Martin on his successful 2019 legislative session and his efforts promoting career and technical education,” said J. Alvin Wilbanks, Superintendent of Gwinnett County Public Schools. “He is a strong advocate for Gwinnett County Public Schools and his work in the legislature is setting up all students in Georgia with better opportunity for success.”

Sen. Martin sponsored several pieces of legislation that will directly impact education in Georgia, including Senate Bill 108. This bill was signed by Gov. Brian P. Kemp on May 2, 2019. It requires all public high schools to offer a course in computer science by the 2024-2025 school year. SB 108 also details a phase-in schedule, lays out the requirements for charter and middle schools and allows the General Assembly to offer grants, which are subject to appropriations, for professional development for teachers who wish to teach computer science courses.

The Georgia Association for Career and Technical Education is a state affiliate of the national Association for Career & Technical Education (ACTE) organization which advocates for career, agricultural and technical education. GACTE’s goal is to help develop a competitive workforce by providing a wide range of CTAE opportunities for teachers and students. You can read more about GACTE here.
