Sen. Orrock Receives Prestigious Award from Georgia Federation of Democratic Women

ATLANTA (May 5, 2009) – Sen. Nan Orrock (D-Atlanta) recently was awarded with the Maxine Goldstein Award, the Georgia Federation of Democratic Women’s (GFDW) highest honor, for her accomplishments while serving in the Georgia legislature for over two decades.

“I am honored to receive such an esteemed recognition from my peers and fellow advocates in Georgia politics,” said Orrock. “The advancement of women has been a concentrated focus throughout my legislative career, and I am deeply grateful to Georgia’s federation for being a strong voice and tireless advocate for important women’s issues across the state.”

Sen. Orrock was chosen for the Goldstein award for her accomplishments in the legislature and community as a strong advocate of women’s and family issues. Her work as the founder of both the Georgia Legislative Women’s Caucus and the Working Families Caucus has been widely recognized. She is also the president of Women Legislators’ Lobby, a national network of progressive women legislators who advocate for federal policies to reduce wasteful military spending and to improve the underfunded services to families, children, the disabled and the elderly.

David Poythress, a Democratic candidate for governor, and his wife made a surprise appearance at the event. They were joined by Martha Kiel, County Affairs Director and Volunteer Coordinator for the Democratic Party of Georgia, Bob Barton, 9th Congressional District Chairman, and President Kristina Simms from Houston County.
