Sen. Orrock Joined with Other Lawmakers Urging Shut Down the Shutdown

WASHINGTON, D.C. (October 1, 2013) – Sen. Nan Orrock (D-Atlanta) joined with Sen. Gail Davenport (D-Jonesboro) and Sen. Gloria Butler (D-Stone Mountain) and others on September 30th on the steps of the U.S. State Capitol to call on Congress to work together and get back to business doing the work of the people. The group is part of Women’s Action for New Directions (WAND) and its program, the Women Legislators’ Lobby (WiLL), a national nonpartisan network of women state legislators. Sen. Orrock serves as President of WiLL and on the advisory board of Georgia WAND.

“57 percent of our nation’s discretionary budget goes to Pentagon spending,” said Sen. Orrock. “If we stopped continuously throwing money at Cold War-era weapons and trying to build new F-35 Joint Strike Fighters that have yet to work, we could rebuild our roads, invest in our educational system and provide adequate services for our returning veterans – all without jeopardizing our economy and credit rating like Congress has done by shutting down. It is inexcusable that our federally elected officials cannot put the American people’s best interests above their own.”

Georgia legislators will be back on Capitol Hill today, October 1st, to urge U.S. Congress to “Shutdown the Shutdown!” They will meet with U.S. Reps. John Lewis, John Barrow, Hank Johnson and David Scott and U.S. Sens. Saxby Chambliss and Johnny Isakson.  State Sen. Orrock will be available to speak with the media today, please contact her cell at: 404-660-9698.
