ATLANTA (August 13, 2013) – Sen. Nan Orrock (D-Atlanta) joined with Protect Your Care, Americans United for Change, other healthcare advocates and state legislators to urge Governor Nathan Deal to expand Medicaid and provide health coverage for more than half a million uninsured Georgians as a part of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), commonly known as Obamacare, at a State Capitol rally August 8th.
“I applaud Keisha Kuma for speaking out on ObamaCare coverage for her pre-existing medical condition,” said Sen. Orrock. “Access to affordable healthcare and coverage for preexisting conditions is an enormous improvement.”
“The Georgia Budget and Policy Institute estimates 25,000 veterans in our state would be eligible under expanded Medicaid. Let’s do the right thing for fellow Georgians and the smart thing for our state’s economy by expanding access to health insurance.”
According to a Georgia State study, if Georgia expanded Medicaid coverage, an estimated 650,000 Georgians would be eligible. The ACA provides federal support for state Medicaid to include individuals with incomes up to 138 percent of the federal poverty level, which is about $26,300 for a family of three. States would receive federal funding to cover the entire first three years of expansion and at least 90 percent in proceeding years.
