ATLANTA (September 24, 2013) – Sen. Nan Orrock (D-Atlanta) joined with Rep. Virgil Fludd (D-Tyrone) and civic engagement groups today to recognize National Voter Registration Day at the State Capitol.
“I’m joining these community leaders to unite Georgia citizens in one mission – get out and vote,” said Sen. Orrock. “Your vote is your voice in our democracy, and it has the power to change our nation’s history. It is incomprehensible that six million Americans did not vote because they missed a registration deadline or did not know how to register in 2008. We are here today to change this story. We will outpace voter suppression efforts by expanding the participation of citizens at the ballot box.”
As part of National Voter Registration Day, there will be events held around metro Atlanta at retail stores, health centers, transit stations, and community centers to inform citizens and register voters. Election Day is set by law to fall on the day after the first Monday in November for the general elections of public officials, which will be November 5th this year. This combined effort includes the work of the Georgia League of Women Voters, Georgia Equality, Georgia NAACP, Georgia StandUp, Georgia Association of Latino Elected Officials, Georgia Coalition for the People’s Agenda, 9-5 Georgia Working Women, AFL-CIO, and others.
Sen. Orrock serves on the advisory board of Georgia Women’s Action for New Directions (WAND). If you’d like more information on how to get involved on National Voter Registration Day, please go online here: http://gawand.org/2013/09/19/national-voter-registration-day-september-24-2013/.
