WASHINGTON, D.C. (October 25, 2013) – Sen. Nan Orrock (D-Atlanta) joined President Obama and eight other state lawmakers representing Progressive States Action, as well as leaders from the labor, business, and faith communities, at the White House to renew the call for the U.S. House of Representatives to pass immigration reform yesterday.
“The President’s message and vision to grow our economy, build our middle class and create jobs by fixing the broken immigration system in the U.S. united us at the White House,” said Sen. Orrock. “Communities across Georgia depend on a workforce that includes immigrants as a vital part of our economy. I urge our Georgia Congressmen to support modernizing our broken immigration system. It’s the right thing to do and the smart thing to do as well!”
Comprehensive immigration reform, including earned citizenship for immigrants already residing here who aspire to become U.S. citizens, enjoys overwhelming public support. The U.S. Senate has already passed such a measure but the legislative process remains stalled in the GOP-controlled U.S. House of Representatives. Today’s event comes on the heels of a summer of grassroots activities across the states, which were designed to keep the pressure on House leaders to break the logjam and move legislation forward.
Led by Sen. Joe Bolkcom of Iowa, Chairman of the Progressive States Action Board, today’s delegation included Sen. Orrock (GA), Sen. Dwight Bullard (FL), Sen. Adam Ebbin (VA), Delegate Tom Hucker (MD), Sen. Karen Keiser (WA), Sen. Jeremy Nordquist (NE), and Assemblyman Tick Segerblom (NV). Angela Giron, who served in the Colorado State Senate from January 2011 to September 2013, also joined the delegation.
Progressive States Action (PSA), with its partner Progressive States Network, aims to transform the political and policy landscape by sparking progressive actions at the state level. Founded in 2005, PSA provides strategic analysis, research, and advocacy tools to state legislators and their staffs, empowering these decision-makers with everything they need to engineer forward-thinking change. Progressive States also works with a wide range of partners and organizations with the aim to change the way issues are debated in the states and to advance a shared progressive agenda across the nation.
