Sen. Marty Harbin Issues Statement on RFRA Bill Not Being Heard in Committee

ATLANTA (March 4, 2019) | Sen. Marty Harbin (R – Tyrone) issued the following statement on Senate Bill 221, or the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA), not being heard in committee today:

“Today, due to time constraints and my desire to be certain that the Religious Freedom Restoration Act is properly vetted in the committee process, our first preliminary hearing has been temporarily postponed at my request. Despite Crossover Day approaching, there is still plenty of time to pass the legislation out of the Georgia General Assembly before the 2019-2020 session ends.

Because our legislature works on a biennium basis, this process may well take both legislative sessions to perfect and bring to fruition.

However, this legislation is incredibly important. My colleagues and I will not stop working with our governor until the rights of all Georgians are protected. Already in place in 31 states including Virginia, the site of Amazon’s newest headquarters, this legislation would protect the first amendment rights of all faiths from government incursion.”
