Sen. Lester Jackson’s St. Patrick’s Day Legislation to Receive Full Vote in House of Representatives

lesterATLANTA (March 7, 2014) | On Monday, the Georgia House of Representatives will take up Senate Bill 318 for floor debate and full vote. Sen. Lester Jackson (D- Savannah) sponsored SB 318 to authorize the sale of adult beverages for consumption on Sundays during the celebration of St. Patrick’s Day in Savannah, GA and surrounding areas.

“As we prepare for over one million visitors in Savannah next weekend for our annual St. Patrick’s Day Celebration, it is essential that my colleagues in the House pass this important piece of legislation,” said Sen. Jackson.  “This bill simply ensures that local citizens and visitors can celebrate this special holiday on Sunday the same way they would on any other day of the week.  I look forward to it’s swift passage in the House of Representatives and Gov. Deal’s signature to make SB 318 the law of the land.”

Sen. Jackson authored SB 318 to accomplish three goals:  increase local control as well as state revenue, promote tourism both in Savannah and throughout the state, and to allow any place of business that sells adult beverages the same opportunity for sales growth on St. Patrick’s Day.  If passed, the bill would permit cities and counties that already allow the sale of adult beverages for consumption to adopt a resolution or ordinance allowing the sale of alcohol from 12:30 P.M. until 12:00 midnight on any Sunday on which St. Patrick’s Day falls.

If passed by the House of Representatives, SB 318 will head to the Governor’s Office for further consideration.
