Sen. Larry Walker to Serve on Appropriations Committee

ATLANTA (January 9, 2018)  |  Sen. Larry Walker (R – Perry) was recently appointed to serve on the Appropriations Committee for the 2018 Legislative Session by the Senate Committee on Assignments.

“I am very excited to have the opportunity to serve on the Appropriations Committee this coming session,” said Sen. Walker. “It’s a true honor to be given the responsibility of managing and allocating our state’s budget. I’d like to thank the Lt. Governor for his support, and I look forward to ensuring our state’s budget is fiscally responsible, as well as the best use of taxpayer dollars in the coming months.”

Sen. Walker also serves as a member of the Senate Agriculture & Consumer Affairs Committee, the Senate Health and Human Services Committee and the Senate Insurance and Labor Committee. The Appropriations Committee is responsible for developing the state’s balanced budget, which is the only legislation the General Assembly is constitutionally required to pass each year, and annually appropriating state funds to various state agencies and organizations. Last year, the state budget was approximately $24.9 billion.

“We must continue to invest and innovate to keep our competitive edge and remain the number one state for business,” said Lt. Governor Cagle. “I know Sen. Walker will thoroughly examine the issues before his committees and look for new opportunities to support the 20th district and move our entire state forward.”

Once a piece of legislation is introduced in the Senate, it is assigned to a committee, depending on its topic. If the committee gives the legislation a “do pass” recommendation, the proposed law is sent to the Rules Committee for consideration. The appointed chairs will oversee the operation and order of Senate committee meetings, including calling for action on bills, resolutions or other matters assigned to that committee.

The second session of the 154th Georgia General Assembly convened on January 8, 2018, in the Georgia State Capitol.
