Sen. Jones Elected 2009 Chairman of the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus

ATHENS – (December 15, 2008) Sen. Emanuel Jones (D-Decatur) has recently been elected to serve as the 2009 chairman of the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus (GLBC). Sen. Jones was elected during the caucus’ meeting last week at the Biennial Institute for Georgia Legislators held at the University of Georgia in Athens. He was elected by the caucus’ 50 plus members to serve a two-year term as chairman, beginning in January.

“I am honored to have been chosen by my peers to serve as their chairman of this distinguished organization,” said Sen. Jones. “I look forward to working with my colleagues in the caucus and all members of the General Assembly to serve as a united voice for those issues important to the African-American community.”

Sen. Jones has been a member of GLBC since his election to the Senate four years ago. He currently serves as the caucus’ vice chairman and as chairman of the Corporate Roundtable Committee. As caucus chairman, Sen. Jones will act as the principal executive officer and will supervise all business and affairs of the caucus. The chairman is considered a leader and trailblazer with the ability to move the caucus forward in the spirit of change.

GLBC seeks to promote the welfare of all minorities in Georgia and to help African-American legislators become more effective policymakers. Sen. Jones follows a long list of influential lawmakers who have served as chairman since the GLBC’s establishment in 1963.

Sen. Emanuel Jones represents the 10th Senate District, which includes portions of DeKalb and Henry counties. He may be reached at 404.656.0502 or via e-mail at emanuel.jones@senate.ga.gov.
