Sen. Islam-Parkes Commemorates 51st Anniversary of Roe vs. Wade Decision Alongside Democratic Colleagues

ATLANTA (Jan. 23, 2024) — In a compelling gathering yesterday afternoon, Sen. Nabilah Islam Parkes (D-Lawrenceville) stood alongside her Democratic peers to mark the 51st anniversary of the landmark Supreme Court ruling in Roe vs. Wade.

“Today should have been cause for celebration, instead the fight continues for basic rights of women,” said Sen. Islam Parkes. “I am proud to stand as the youngest woman in the Georgia State Senate. This has allowed me to a unique perspective, not just on women’s rights but all issues facing Georgia families.”

Observing the current restrictions on abortion, Sen. Islam Parkes continued by saying that “we found ourselves at war on women and families. Many of my colleagues have turned a blind eye to this tragedy because they are out of sight and out of mind. Over the years, women have shared their stories across the state with me as, for decades, they have fought tirelessly for their rights. Today, the fight continues for sex education, family planning, basic medical facilities and access to abortion rights. Georgia bears the shameful burden of having one of the highest infant and mortality rates. This is a crisis that must stop and I refuse to sit idly by and allow our rights of our citizens that form its backbone to be taken from us. Every time the people are allowed to be given a vote on abortion rights, it causes an expansion, not a restriction of those rights. The people of Georgia believe in safe abortion, in modern medical infrastructure and the rights of women. I will fight for our freedom to choose what we do with our bodies. We will resist and we will prevail.”

A staunch defender of reproductive rights, Sen. Nabilah Islam Parkes remains dedicated to championing and safeguarding reproductive freedoms. To view Sen. Islam Parkes’ speech in its entirety, please use the following link: https://vimeo.com/905665953/fc2191950b?share=copy
