Sen. Hardie Davis Visits Augusta Schools During Georgia Pre-K Week

ATLANTA (October 7, 2013) – Senator Hardie Davis (D – Augusta) read to three Augusta preschool classrooms last week in celebration of Georgia Pre-K Week. Around the state, thousands of Georgia’s youngest students were recognized for their efforts to prepare for school success. The third annual Georgia Pre-K Week ran from Monday, September 30 to Friday, October 4.

“I am proud of the efforts put forth by these schools to instill a foundation for lifelong learning in their students,” said Senator Davis. “It is never too early to introduce the benefits of strong literacy skills, and these three schools are going above and beyond to support their students.”

Senator Davis visited Pre-K classrooms at Diamond Lakes Elementary, Hains Elementary and Lake Forest Hills Elementary. While there, he participated in a reading activity with the children, toured the facility and received an up-close look at the many ways that schools in Augusta are supporting early learning. Senator Davis will return to all of the schools visited during Pre-K Week with book donations for each school library.

“Georgia’s Pre-K program is an exceptional program that can serve as a model for our country,” said Pat Willis, Executive Director of Voices for Georgia’s Children, a child advocacy organization. “About 84,000 four year olds in Georgia benefit from this remarkable program, a milestone in the critical phase of education that takes place from birth to age eight.”

Senator Davis was one of nearly 150 state officials to visit Pre-K classrooms in all 159 counties across Georgia to celebrate Georgia Pre-K Week.
