ATLANTA (June 6, 2013) – Senator Hardie Davis (D – Augusta) has been named as a member of two influential Georgia State Senate study committees. Over the next several months, these study committees will review several policy areas and regulations in need of modification or reorganization.
“The issues studied by these committees may impact Georgians in different ways, but these are issues that are long overdue for a thorough analysis,” said Senator Davis. “I look forward to speaking with key stakeholders, fellow elected officials and constituents about how we can continue our work to ensure Georgia a state that works for everyone.”
The Senate Expungement Reform Study Committees and the Senate State Fair Tax Study Committee were created by the passage of Senate Resolution 247 and Senate Resolution 72, respectively, during the 2013 legislative session. As stated in both resolutions, the committees will also include four other members of the Senate as appointed by the Lieutenant Governor.
The Senate Expungement Reform Study Committee will study Georgia’s process for clearing criminal records in certain situations and also consider whether revisions or updates to the current process are needed. Situations in which record expungement may be considered is the wrongful accusation or conviction of a crime or if such a conviction interferes with finances, career opportunities or domestic relations.
The Senate State Fair Tax Study Committee will specifically review Georgia’s current tax structure and its effectiveness to determine if a state level Fair Tax should be considered as a tax reform solution. The Fair Tax is a proposed method of state and federal level tax reform that taxes consumers on the sale of new goods and services and eliminates the employee payroll tax.
Each study committee will present its findings—and any resulting proposed legislation—by December 2013.
