Sen. Fort Issues Statement Regarding Supreme Court Decision on Arizona Voting Law

ATLANTA (June 17, 2013) – Sen. Vincent Fort (D-Atlanta) has issued the following statement:

“Today, the Supreme Court issued an important decision declaring portions of the Arizona voting law unconstitutional, a law almost identical to Georgia’s own SB 86.  In a 7-2 vote, our nation’s highest court struck down the provision that requires documentary proof of citizenship when voting in federal elections.  I applaud the justices who interpreted the law for what it really was: an attempt to shut out certain groups from the democratic process.

During the debate on SB 86, a bill that was largely based on Arizona’s law, I argued that the legislation was simply a ploy to dilute Latino and immigrants’ ability to vote.  This was prime example of a solution in search of a problem with proponents of the bill never able to provide proof of voter fraud.”
