Sen. Emanuel Jones and MLK Advisory Council Host Annual Ceremony at Capitol

ATLANTA (January 23, 2019) | Sen. Emanuel Jones (D – Decatur) and The Martin Luther King, Jr. Advisory Council hosted a celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day at the Georgia Capitol on Friday, January 18. The ceremony included speeches from Governor Brian Kemp, Lieutenant Governor Geoff Duncan, Speaker of the House David Ralston, Bernice King and former Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin.

“It is an honor to respect and remember Dr. King’s legacy with such esteemed guests at the Capitol,” said Sen. Jones. “It was especially moving that all of us could gather together to honor the progress we have made, while remaining mindful and intentional with the progress we have yet to make. I believe that events like this reinvigorate the still pertinent values that Dr. King represented: equality, inclusivity and nonviolence. As legislators and as Georgians, we can use this national holiday as a reminder of the ideals we are constantly striving towards.”

The ceremony took place at the North Steps of the Georgia Capitol and was attended by members of the Georgia General Assembly, Georgia’s First Family, Dr. King’s family and various other distinguished individuals. Tuesday, January 15th would have been Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s 90th birthday.
