ATLANTA (February 10, 2014) | Sen. Cecil Staton ( R- Macon), along with Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle and Majority Leader Ronnie Chance, welcomed U.S. Senator Saxby Chambliss to the Georgia State Senate on Monday, February 10, 2014. Sen. Chambliss was recognized with Senate Resolution 889, honoring his many achievements as a U.S. Congressman.
“I was proud to join my colleagues in welcoming Sen. Saxby Chambliss to the Senate Chamber today,” said Sen. Staton. “Sen. Saxby Chambliss is a remarkable statesman and has represented the State of Georgia well during his tenure as a U.S. Congressman and U.S. Senator. Sen. Chambliss was my congressman when I first became involved in Georgia politics in the 1990s and is a dear friend. Catherine and I wish him and Julianne the very best in retirement.”
Sen. Saxby Chambliss was first elected to the United States of Representatives to represent Georgia’s 8th Congressional District in 1994 and was subsequently elected to serve in the United States Senate in 2002.
During his time in the U.S. House of Representatives, Saxby Chambliss served on the United States House of Representatives Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and served as the chair of the House Intelligence Subcommittee on Terrorism and Homeland Security. He played an instrumental role in overseeing the intelligence investigations after the attacks on 9-11.
Currently, Sen. Chambliss serves on the Senate Armed Forces, Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry, Rules, and the Special Committee on Aging and serves as the vice-chair of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence.
Recognizing the State of Georgia’s invaluable contributions to the nation’s agricultural industry, Congressman Chambliss worked to pass two vital farm bills and reform the federal crop insurance program.
Under his leadership, Congressman Chambliss also worked to promote the defense of our state and nation, supporting Georgia’s defense industry and military community.
“Sen. Chambliss has worked tirelessly to advance policies promoting private sector job growth, strong education principles, fiscal responsibility and a favorable business climate. I was honored to host Sen. Chambliss in the Georgia Senate chamber and recognize his many contributions to the state,” said Sen. Majority Leader Ronnie Chance (R – Tyrone).
Sen. Saxby Chambliss has announced that he will not run for re-election in 2014.
