ATLANTA (November 14, 2014) | Sen. Butch Miller (R – Gainesville) was honored with ACCG’s 2014 Legislative Service Award at the organization’s Fall District Meeting on November 12. The award recognizes his efforts to improve public policy directly affecting Georgia county operations and infrastructure during the 2014 legislative session. Sen. Miller was specifically praised for his work on House Bill 310 and Senate Bill 297, both of which were successfully signed into Georgia law before the conclusion of the legislative session.
“ACCG works incredibly hard to ensure county officials and local governments are operating in their most efficient form. I’m honored to be acknowledged by such a great organization, especially one that provides our local governments with the fundamental knowledge and infrastructure needed for continued fiscal health,” said Sen. Miller.
“ACCG is pleased to honor our state legislators with the 2014 Legislative Service Awards,” said ACCG Executive Director Ross King. “We applaud their diligent efforts on behalf of counties and all citizens of the State of Georgia.”
Sen. Miller sponsored HB 310 in the Senate, aligning the state and local elections calendar with the court-ordered federal elections calendar. HB 310 prevents local governments and taxpayers from funding two different elections. Sen. Miller also sponsored SB 297, ultimately providing clarity and efficiencies to the reporting and implementation of Georgia’s new ethics laws.
The swiftness of action allowed county officials and their staff members to properly prepare for and apply changes to local elections calendar and ethics filing processes.
ACCG works on the behalf of county officials and their communities to provide public policy information and legislative advocacy, leadership development, and civic engagement initiatives. Founded in 1914 when county officials came together to help fund the state’s first highway department, ACCG today serves as a catalyst for advancing Georgia’s counties.
