ATLANTA (March 6, 2018) | Senate Bill 385, sponsored by Burt Jones (R – Jackson), passed the Georgia Senate on Wednesday, February 28, 2018.
“I would like to thank my colleagues for their support of this very important legislation,” said Sen. Jones. “By increasing the tipping fee for their regional landfill by just a couple of dollars, a significant amount of additional revenue would be added directly to Butts County’s digest. This will allow the county to put more money back into the local community and decrease their mill rate for property owners by six mills. I look forward to working with members of the House to ensure this legislation moves forward and becomes law by the end of this session.”
Under SB 385, the tipping fees for regional landfills would change from the current rate of $1 per ton to $3 per ton. The change in the rate would be significant for Butts County and the other 12 communities that operate regional landfills. With the current $1 per ton surcharge fee, Butts County brings in nearly $1 million. If SB 385 is signed into law and the surcharge fee is bumped up to $3 per ton, that revenue would be closer to $3 million. SB 385 is now in the Georgia House of Representatives for consideration and approval.
