ATLANTA (April 3, 2014) | Senator Burt Jones (R-Jackson) was selected to serve on the Child Welfare Reform Council yesterday by Governor Nathan Deal. The council will work to improve Georgia’s child welfare system.
“Our child welfare system is meant to provide a safe haven for children while their family situations are being decided, however with the recent reports, our system needs some re-evaluating,” said Sen. Jones. “I am thankful the Governor has entrusted me to serve on this council as we continue to explore solutions that improve the current status of our child welfare system.”
The council will convene throughout the remainder of this year to complete a comprehensive review of the Division of Family and Children Services and advise the governor on possible executive agency reforms and legislative fixes if necessary. The council will work in conjunction with the Governor’s Office and the Department of Human Services.
“With this council now in place, it is our hope to uncover new approaches that will strengthen our child welfare system and ensure that Georgia’s children are given the best shot at a good life,” Deal said. “These appointees have dedicated themselves to improving the lives of children, and I feel confident that together they will produce meaningful and thoughtful reform recommendations.”
Stephanie Blank will chair the council which is comprised of twenty other members, including senators, representatives and interested stakeholders like judges, child advocate members and social workers.
