ATLANTA (June 22, 2018) | Sen. Burt Jones (R – Jackson ) has been appointed by Lt. Governor Casey Cagle to serve as Chair of the Senate Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport Operations and Authority Creation Study Committee.
“I want to thank Lt. Governor Cagle for appointing this very important committee,” said Sen. Jones. “Our goal is to determine what the best process is moving forward in regards to operations of one of our state’s biggest employers and economic drivers – Hartsfield-Jackson Airport. We will hold several meetings with all interested parties to seek out information on whether a state-run authority is better suited to ensure that we are maximizing the full potential of the airport when it comes to our state’s economy and potential to bring additional businesses and jobs. The committee will also seriously look at a 20-year period and consider the possibility of adding a secondary airport hub modeling other state’s with the same population density as Georgia.”
The Senate Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport Operations and Authority Creation Study Committee was created by the passage of Senate Resolution 882 during the 2018 Legislative Session. As stated in the resolution, the committee shall be comprised of 13 members of the Senate. The Senate Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport Operations and Authority Creation Study Committee will review the possible transfer of operations of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport to an authority in the interest of public welfare, national security and economic stability. Additionally, the study committee will review what federal laws and regulations must be utilized if the transfer to an authority moves forward. The committee must report its findings on or before December 1, 2018.
