Sen. Buckner Appointed to Notable Committees for First Senate Term

ATLANTA (January 15, 2009) – State Senator Gail Buckner (D-Jonesboro) began her first term Monday as a state senator in the Georgia General Assembly, where she was appointed by Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle to the Interstate Cooperation, State Institutions and Property, Economic Development, Education and Youth, Urban Affairs and Government Oversight committees.

“I am proud the lieutenant governor has appointed me to serve as a member of these important committees, many of which will tackle the most difficult issues facing our state,” said Buckner. “Several of these committees oversee legislation that directly impacts residents in my district, and I look forward to the opportunity to see that my constituents’ needs are met at the local level.”

Sen. Buckner is a 16 year veteran of the General Assembly, having served in the House of Representatives from 1990 to 2006 when she left office to run for Secretary of State. During her service in the House, she championed education issues to provide for safe schools and worked hard to improve the research, prevention and treatment of cancer available in Georgia.
