ATLANTA (December 9, 2015) | Sen. Ben Watson (R – Savannah) was appointed by the Senate Committee on Assignments to serve on the Transportation Committee for the 2016 Legislative Session. He will also serve as a member of several other influential Senate committees.
“I am honored to have been newly selected by our Lt. Gov. to serve on the Transportation Committee, in addition to my other committee duties,” said Sen. Watson. “I look forward to entering the 2016 legislative session with a fresh perspective on issues facing constituents, and working to ensure a stronger and more successful Georgia.”
Sen. Watson will also serve as Vice-Chairman of the Economic Development and Tourism, and as a member of the Health and Human Services, Public Safety and Ethics Committees.
“The Georgia State Senate’s top priority is preserving Georgia’s reputation as a leading state for business development, job creation and educational opportunity. I look forward to working directly with Senate leadership in order to find real solutions for Georgia’s most significant and pressing issues,” said Lt. Governor Cagle.
“We are fortunate to have a wealth of talent and experience in the State Senate,” said President Pro Tem David Shafer (R-Duluth). “I am confident that our new committee chairs and committee members will do great work.”
Once a piece of legislation is introduced in the Senate, it is assigned to a Committee, depending on its topic. If the Committee gives the legislation a “do pass” recommendation, then the proposed law is sent to the Rules Committee for consideration. The appointed chairs will oversee the operation and order of Senate committee meetings, including calling for action on bills, resolutions or other matters assigned to that committee.
The second session of the 153rd Georgia General Assembly will convene January 11, 2016, at the Georgia State Capitol.
