Resolution Encouraging Federal Action on Parental Rights Passes Senate Floor

ATLANTA (March 1, 2018)  | Senate Resolution 681, sponsored by Sen. Marty Harbin (R – Tyrone), passed the Senate Floor on Wednesday, February 28, 2018. This resolution urges the United States Congress to take action on the Parental Rights Amendment allowing parents to raise their children with minimal governmental interference.

“This resolution is a preservation of every parent’s right to raise their children by their own beliefs,” said Sen. Harbin. “It is not our job as a state or as the federal government to step in and tell a parent how to raise their child unless the child’s safety is in jeopardy. I’m glad this bill passed the Senate Floor and I look forward to seeing it move through the legislature to call on our leaders at the federal level to take action.”

The Parental Rights Amendment would allow parents to make decisions in the best interest of their children in regards to education, religion and general upbringing without the interference of the state unless there is high governmental interest. SR 681, encouraging the U.S. Congress to propose this amendment to protect parental rights, passed the Senate Floor Wednesday with a vote of 33 to 19.
