President Pro Tempore Butch Miller Issues Statement on Immigration Bill

ATLANTA (February 9, 2022) | Senate President Pro Tempore Butch Miller (R – Gainesville) today said the Biden administration’s failure to address the southern border crisis heightens the need for legislation such as Senate Bill 448, which would empower Georgia law enforcement to check the citizenship status of detainees during reasonable stops and lawful investigations.

“The ongoing border crisis poses a threat to our state, and we need leadership in Georgia to stand in the gap if the federal government won’t do its job,” Sen. Miller said. “Our state has not only the right but the responsibility to uphold the rule of law and keep our communities safe from the gang violence, illegal drugs and financial burdens to local governments that come with illegal immigration.

“That’s why I authored SB 448. If during a lawful stop, a police officer has reason to believe that their detainee is not a citizen, common sense dictates that the officer should be able to act on that suspicion.”
