ATLANTA (June 23, 2020) | Today, President Pro Tempore Butch Miller (R – Gainesville) released the following statement regarding the General Assembly’s passage of House Bill 426:
“In recent months, it became increasingly apparent that Georgia must enact hate crimes legislation. The families of the individuals who have lost their lives at the hands of hate deserve nothing but sweeping justice. To the thousands of Georgians who have called, emailed, marched, protested and made their voices heard at the Capitol, I applaud your commitment to fulfilling social justice. Please know that your state leaders hear you, see you, and are actively listening to your concerns. I pledge to continue working across the aisle to ensure inclusivity is a top priority in the measures pushed by lawmakers under the Gold Dome.
While this is only the first step toward justice for those who have lost a loved one to heinous acts of hate, I applaud my colleagues in the House and Senate for prioritizing this bipartisan measure in the last few days of the 2020 legislative session. Hate has no place in Georgia and we must unite to send a clear message that the Peach State will not tolerate any form of discrimination. Today’s vote is the first step toward doing just that and I commend today’s historic passage of House Bill 426.”
