ATLANTA (February 28, 2012) – Sen. Lindsey Tippins (R-Marietta) welcomed local student Anna Tucker, freshman at North Cobb Christian School, to the Capitol on Wednesday, Feb. 21. Tucker participated in the Senate Page Program for the day and was honored with Senate Resolution 860 for her achievements as Miss Cherokee Rose Outstanding Teen for 2012.

Sen. Jason Carter Files Legislation for the Leasing Procedure of Public Properties
ATLANTA (February 28, 2012) – Sen. Jason Carter (D-Decatur) has filed SB 498, which would require a procedural process for the leasing of state and local government property to a private entity for non-governmental reasons.
Sen. Orrock Joins Rally on Immigration Bill to Block Undocumented Students
ATLANTA (February 28, 2012) – Sen. Nan Orrock (D-Atlanta) joined educators, students and other state legislators at an immigration rally on the steps of the Capitol today to protest Senate Bill 458 and House Bill 59. These bills would ban undocumented students, with no regard to academic credentials, from attending all 35 institutions in the University System of Georgia and 26 institutes in the Technical College System of Georgia. It also makes amendments to last year’s already detrimental HB 87. The amendments would ease licensing for business owners in Georgia who’ve already proven their legal status by not requiring proof upon reapplication. This also applies to other public benefits currently requiring verification of legal status in Georgia.

The FY 2012 Amended Budget: A Balancing Act

In January, Gov. Deal released his amended budget for FY 2012. It is specifically stated in Georgia’s constitution that our state cannot spend more than what it receives in revenue. This is a fiscally responsible requirement that permits Georgia to maintain a Triple-A bond rating—we are one of only eight states to hold this distinction—and prevents Georgia from perpetual debt.
