ATLANTA (April 20, 2011) –Legislation aimed at modernizing Georgia’s tax system was ultimately tabled during the last week of the 2011 General Assembly for further study. State Sen. Jeff Mullis (R-Chickamauga) has been a strong advocate of state tax reform during his time in office, seeking ways to bring simplicity and fairness to the state’s tax code.
“I am a full believer in personal liberty and lowering the overall tax burden on our citizens, and shifting Georgia to more of a consumption-based tax system is the most effective way to encourage economic growth, job creation, personal investment, and overall prosperity,” said Mullis. “Lowering the personal income tax while broadening the sales tax base is critical to ensure Georgia’s antiquated tax code is fair to every resident and that we can compete effectively with other states for jobs and business. Simply put, this is an issue that must be addressed but one that cannot be rushed through the legislature. I am confident that we will author a strong measure that makes Georgia’s tax code fairer, flatter and one that benefits every Georgia taxpayer in a meaningful way.”
Last week, the Special Joint Committee on Georgia Revenue Structure announced it was delaying a vote on House Bill 388, which included an extensive overhaul of the Georgia tax code. The legislation came as a result of findings made by a special council consisting of leading independent economists, academics, and business leaders from around the state. They had developed a list of recommendations for modernizing the state tax code, with the top recommendation to gradually lower the state personal income tax rate while expanding the sales and use tax base for consumption of services. Mullis stated he had several concerns on the tax reform plan during the committee process, but looks forward to working with Senate and House leaders to perfect a tax overhaul that will ultimately benefit every Georgian and make our state even more attractive to live and work in.
