ATLANTA (April 30, 2019) | Senate Bill 77, sponsored by Sen. Jeff Mullis (R – Chickamauga), was signed into law by Governor Brian P. Kemp on Friday, April 26, 2019, at Gordon Lee High School in Chickamauga, Georgia.
“I want to thank Governor Brian P. Kemp, Lt. Governor Duncan and all of my colleagues in the Georgia General Assembly for their work on passing and signing Senate Bill 77 into law,” said Sen. Mullis. “SB 77 creates protections for all monuments and preserves Georgia’s history so that we can learn from our past. I believe it is important for all of Georgia’s history to remain a part of our society today so that our future generations can know where they came from, what has occurred in our past and avoid any injustices in the future.”
SB 77 creates protections for all monuments located on private or public property. This legislation prohibits removing or concealing any monument located on private or public property and provides that anyone who violates this law would be guilty of a misdemeanor and required to pay damages triple the amount of financial losses suffered. With the Governor’s signature, SB 77 became law effective Friday, April 26, 2019.
