Legislation Adding Oversight to County Elections Administration Passes

ATLANTA (February 24, 2021) | Today, Senate Bill 89, sponsored by Senate President Pro Tempore Butch Miller (R – Gainesville), was successfully passed by the Senate.

“Senate Bill 89 represents an important step towards rectifying the distrust and doubt many Georgians currently feel in regards to our elections process,” said Sen. Miller. “This bill proposes a simple, commonsense solution by creating the position of a Chief Elections Assistance Officer who will have the authority to step in and evaluate the efficiency of the administration of elections in our counties and be empowered with the authority to, if necessary, intervene and enact recommended changes. I am proud that this legislation received passage in the Senate and I look forward to working with our colleagues in the House to see this important bill become law.”

Senate Bill 89 would create the position of a Chief Elections Assistance Officer within the office of the Secretary of State, who would be responsible for supporting and assisting county election officials.
