 ATLANTA (October 26, 2009) – Over the last year, Georgia has seen historic drops in revenue.  Our state has had only 10 years of revenue declines since 1952, and 2009 proved to have the most significant decline of those 10 years.  Looking ahead to the 2010 Legislative Session, creating a fiscally responsible state budget will be our most critical task.  Here’s an overall look at our current budget situation, how other states are managing their revenue shortfalls, and what the Senate is doing to prepare for the upcoming budget process.    Continue reading “South Georgia at the State Capitol”

While I often quote our founding fathers for their wisdom in creating a Constitution of almost divine qualities, there is one glaring issue that they overlooked.  They should have required a balanced budget or at the very least limited debt except in time of war.

Sen. Seabaugh Named to Leadership Post of National Conference of State Legislatures

ATLANTA (Oct. 8, 2009) – Sen. Mitch Seabaugh (R-Sharpsburg) has been named  Vice Chair of the National Conference of State Legislatures’ (NCSL) Budgets and Revenue Standing Committee. Georgia Senator and NCSL President Don Balfour made the appointment.  Seabaugh’s appointment now makes the sixth Georgia legislator in a national leadership role with NCSL.

Tourism Industry a Key Component of Georgia’s Economic Future

ATLANTA (Oct. 7, 2009) – Georgia, like so many states, is facing tough economic times right now.  Families and businesses alike are cutting back their budgets and concentrating on getting from one day to the next.  However, many are cautiously optimistic as hopes for recovery begin to appear.  While we stand on the brink of a new economic era, we must reevaluate where we are as a state.  Operating in a newly recovered economy does not call for businesses as usual.  As state leaders, now is the time to position our state to emerge from this downturn as the economic engine of the South.
