Sen. Jones Announces Town Hall Meeting in DeKalb

ATLANTA (June 30, 2010) – Sen. Emanuel Jones (D-Decatur), chairman of the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus (GLBC), is announcing that the caucus will hold a town hall meeting in DeKalb County on Saturday, July 10.  The meeting will feature a wrap up of the 2010 Legislative Session, focusing on such hot topics as transportation, education, jobs and water.  Attendees will have the opportunity to engage in a question and answer session with legislators at the end of the meeting.

Sen. Jones announces Golf Tournament Benefitting Scholarships for High School Students

ATLANTA (June 8, 2010) – Sen. Emanuel Jones (D-Decatur), chairman of the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus (GLBC), is inviting his constituents and Georgians everywhere for a round of golf at the prestigious Eagle’s Landing Country Club in Stockbridge on Friday, June 25, to benefit the GLBC scholarship fund.  The tournament is open to the general public, who will have the chance to play alongside Jones and members of the caucus.  Proceeds raised from ticket sales will go to benefit the GLBC scholarship fund, which has helped students from across the state pursue a higher education.  Participants will have the opportunity to win exciting door prizes.

Bill to Zero Out Zero Tolerance in Schools Signed into Law

ATLANTA (May 25, 2010) – In a victory for Georgia school children across the state, Sen. Emanuel Jones’ (D-Decatur) legislation to curb the abuse of zero tolerance discipline policies was signed into law today by Governor Sonny Perdue.  Jones introduced Senate Bill 299 after a 14-year-old Morgan County student was arrested for voluntarily turning in a fishing knife to his principal late last year.

Zero Tolerance Discipline Bill becomes Law

ATLANTA (May 24, 2010) – A bill to curb the abuse of zero tolerance discipline policies in Georgia schools will be signed into law by Governor Sonny Perdue on Tuesday, May 25.  The bill’s author, Sen. Emanuel Jones (D-Decatur), will host a press conference in the State Capitol at 2:30 p.m. following the bill signing.  Senate Bill 299 has received support from teachers, parents, juvenile court judges and education associations across Georgia, many of whom will be available for questions.

Georgia State Legislature Unanimously Approves Landmark Zero Tolerance Discipline Bill

ATLANTA (April 29, 2010) – A unanimous vote by the entire Georgia General Assembly today makes Georgia one of the first states in the country to restrain excessive zero tolerance discipline policies in schools.  The landmark legislation by Sen. Emanuel Jones (D-Decatur) received final passage on the last day of the 2010 Legislative Session, and now goes before the governor for his signature before it can become law.
