Sen. Jones Announces GLBC Heritage Dinner

ATLANTA (Feb. 9, 2010) – Sen. Emanuel Jones (D-Decatur), chairman of the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus (GLBC), is announcing the annual Heritage Dinner at the Georgia Freight Depot, one of the most successful and well-attended cultural events around the Georgia State Capitol during the legislative session.  Invitees include keynote speaker Dick Gregory, an activist, comedian and humanitarian, as well as Georgia Department of Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond.  The event will also feature music by Kandi Burress, cast member of the Real Housewives of Atlanta.    This GLBC dinner celebrates African-American history by exhibiting paintings, music, and dance, as well as acknowledging community activists who diligently serve to improve and enhance communities of color in Georgia.  Proceeds raised will help support the GLBC’s Young Scholars Scholarship and Legislative Internship programs.

Public Hearing to Discuss C-TRAN Funding Options

ATLANTA (Feb. 1, 2010) – Sen. Emanuel Jones (D-Decatur) and members of the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus (GLBC) will hold a public hearing to discuss funding options for the C-TRAN public transit system in Clayton County.  All major stakeholders have been invited to join the discussion, including Clayton County commissioners, ITT Technical Institute, Clayton State University, business leaders and labor organizations.

Zero Tolerance Discipline Policies Equal Zero Common Sense

ATLANTA (Jan. 27, 2010) – There is a crisis occurring in our schools, and it’s a crisis of common sense.  What else do you call it when a well-behaved, 14-year-old boy is treated like a common criminal for voluntarily turning in a pocket knife to his school principle?  The zero tolerance approach to discipline often serves only to entrap good kids into a life of crime.  I have introduced a legislative package to limit the abuse of zero tolerance policies and bring some common sense into the way schools discipline their students.

Sen. Jones to Discuss Education and Jobs at Town Hall Meeting in Stockbridge

ATLANTA (Jan. 29, 2010) – Sen. Emanuel Jones (D-Decatur) is inviting the public to attend a town hall meeting on Saturday, Jan. 30 to discuss education and jobs at the Fairview Public Library in Stockbridge.  He will be joined by State Superintendent of Schools Kathy Cox to talk about the issues facing education in Georgia, and will also discuss his legislation to curb the abuse of zero tolerance discipline policies in schools.  A representative of the Georgia Department of Labor will also be present to talk about issues facing employment in Georgia.

Sen. Jones Introduces Bill to Limit Abuse of Zero-Tolerance Discipline Policies

ATLANTA (Dec. 8, 2009) – Sen. Emanuel Jones (D-Decatur) in a press conference today at the State Capitol announced legislation that will limit the abuse of zero-tolerance discipline policies in schools.  He prefiled the bill in preparation for the 2010 Legislative Session, which begins January 11.
