ATLANTA (March 15, 2012) – The Georgia Senate has passed a local homestead option sales tax legislation authored by Senate Majority Leader Chip Rogers. This plan could eliminate the County portion of the property tax for Cherokee homeowners.
“This measure could ultimately earn Cherokee County the distinction of having some of the lowest property taxes in the state for homeowners,” said Rogers. “Taking the tax burden off homeowners and ensuring it is spread among all who travel and work in our County is fair. I join with our County Commission in this major effort to reduce taxes on our local citizens.”
This proposal would create a referendum for Cherokee voters to determine whether to eliminate the county government portion of the property tax on homeowners through the collection of a one penny sales tax. Supporters suggest the Homestead Option Sales Tax is a more fair and effective method of collecting taxes. It provides real and significant tax relief to Cherokee County homeowners while making sure that everyone using County services contributes to the payment of those services.
