Bill to Address Boundaries of City of Stockbridge Signed by Governor

ATLANTA (April 29, 2022) | On Monday, April 25, 2022, Senate Bill 612, sponsored by Sen. Senator Emanuel Jones (D – Decatur) and Sen. Brian Strickland (R – McDonough) was signed by Gov. Brian Kemp. SB 612 proposes new boundaries for the City of Stockbridge to enhance contiguity and increase access to local government services.

“Previously, the corporate boundaries of the City of Stockbridge were scattered and lacked consistency and contiguity,” said Sen. Jones. “This limited the ability of some residents of the areas just outside or between the city’s borders from accessing important services, such as public safety. Additionally, residents just outside the city limits expressed concerns over adequate local representation. Senate Bill 612 addresses this by remapping the boundaries of the City of Stockbridge to create a more whole and connected city and allowing citizens a greater voice over their local governance. I am proud that this bi-partisan measure, with the support of the local representation of the City of Stockbridge, was signed by Governor Brian Kemp to bring these much needed changes to our community.”

Senate Bill 612 would present a ballot question to be included on the November 2022 General Election ballot to ask for the approval of voters in the territory sought to be annexed into the City of Stockbridge. If adopted by voters, the boundaries of the City of Stockbridge would be expanded to provide for greater contiguity. Additionally, the legislation creates five City Council districts, rather than having City Council members elected at-large. SB 612 was signed by Gov. Brian Kemp on April 25, 2022.  If approved by voters, the annexation called for under the bill would take effect on January 1, 2023.
