Bill Allowing Part-Time Appellate Attorneys to Practice Law in State Courts Passes Senate

ATLANTA (March 4, 2013) – Senate Bill 96, which would allow part-time assistant and solicitors general to practice law in State Court with exceptions, passed the Senate by a vote of 52 to 0. The bill was sponsored by Sen. Jeff Mullis (R-Chickamauga).

“This bill will clarify the existing rules and conditions under which part-time assistant and solicitor general can practice law outside of their official capacity,” said Sen. Mullis.

Currently, part-time solicitor generals and part-time assistant solicitor general of the state courts are not allowed to engage in private practice cases. SB 96 will allow these individuals to defend cases before the state court as long as the case is not of a criminal matter.

The bill will now transfer to the House of Representatives for consideration.
