Georgia General Assembly Passes Legislation to Increase Early Literacy

ATLANTA (March 28, 2023) | Yesterday, the Georgia General Assembly passed Senate Bill 211 to establish the “Georgia Council on Literacy” and House Bill 538, the “Georgia Early Literacy Act.” The measures, sponsored by Senator Billy Hickman (R – Statesboro) and Representative Bethany Ballard (R – Warner Robins) respectively, would jointly provide for the establishment and implementation of evidence-based literacy instruction methods and curriculum for students to be overseen by the Georgia Council on Literacy.

Senators Sally Harrell and Kim Jackson File Legislation to Create Comprehensive Anti-Discrimination Protections

ATLANTA (March 24, 2023) | This week, Senators Sally Harrell (D – Atlanta) and Kim Jackson (D – Stone Mountain) filed Senate Bill 319 to significantly expand Georgia’s civil rights laws to protect all Georgians from discrimination in housing, public accommodations and employment. Georgia is one of only three states that do not have comprehensive non-discrimination laws in these areas.

Sen. Emanuel Jones Urges Governor Kemp to Remove Remaining Members of the DeKalb County Board of Ethics

ATLANTA (March 17, 2023) | Yesterday, Senator Emanuel Jones (D – Decatur), requested the assistance of Gov. Kemp in the removal of the two remaining members and two alternate members of the DeKalb County Board of Ethics. Five members of the DeKalb County Board of Ethics have previously resigned due to ongoing internal disagreements.
