Sen. James Attends Akwa Ibom State Association of Nigeria Annual Convention

ATLANTA (August 29, 2013) – State Senator Donzella James (D-Atlanta) recently attended The 26th Annual Akwa Ibom State Association of Nigeria Convention in Washington, D.C.  This year’s theme was “Preserving the Culture of Akwa Ibom State for Future Generations through the Building of a Cultural Center.”

“It was an honor to attend this wonderful event hosted by National President Mr. Emmanuel Isong and the Akwa Ibom State Association of Nigeria,” said Sen. James.  “Nigeria is a country that is very close to my heart and I greatly appreciated the opportunity to learn more about their heritage, culture and way of life.  Meeting with Nigerian Governor Obong Godswill Obot Akpabio was truly the highlight of my trip.”

The Akwa Ibom annual convention typically attracts over 4,000 Akwa Ibom State indigenes and well-wishers around the world.  As with past Conventions, this year’s event featured the best of Akwa Ibom rich culture, food and fashion as well as a Governor’s ball, youth leadership events, seminars, a free health fair, a town hall meeting, networking and more.

Founded over 25 years ago, the Akwa Ibom State Association of Nigeria (USA), Inc. is a nonpartisan, non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization with over 35 chapters across major U.S. cities. The Association’s interest is in the affairs and welfare of Akwa Ibom State, which is one of Nigeria’s 36 states located in the Niger-Delta region. Populated by approximately 4.1million people, Akwa Ibom has emerged as an economic power block, rich in crude oil, natural gas, coal, gold, silver nitrate, glass sand and other mineral resources.
