ATLANTA (February 22, 2012) – Sen. Valencia Seay (D-Riverdale) honored the Clayton County Fire & Emergency Services for their World Championship titles for the “Open” and “Over 40” relay teams with SR 711. They competed against 600 teams from eight different countries at the annual Firefighters Combat Challenge last November. The combined victories raise the Clayton Firefighters total World Championships titles to eight.
“The Clayton County Fire & Emergency Services groups have proven their fitness and skill as world leaders of their industry. They save lives and protect our property with unwavering dedication, and we owe them much more than our gratitude,” said Sen. Seay. “These men and women are true public servants, and it is my privilege to serve as their Senator.”
The Clayton County Open Relay Team consists of Sergeant Lawrence Adams, Lieutenant James Barbee, Sergeant Daniel Hardegree, Firefighter Michael Ballisty and Firefighter Brad Bailey. They hold the world record time of 1:07:74.
The Clayton County Over 40 Relay Team consists of Fire Chief Jeff Hood, Battalion Chief Jay Fordham, Lieutenant Ernest Donaldson, Lieutenant Billy Rice and Firefighter Frank Bryson. They hold the world record time of 1:17:32.
The Clayton County Open Relay Team has a record of 56 wins, and the Over 40 Relay Team has five World Championships. The teams simulate real-life-experiences in “full bunker gear”, demonstrating firefighters’ physical demands in the field. Their challenges include climbing a five-story building, hoisting, chopping, dragging hoses and rescuing a life-sized, 175-pound victim.
