Sen. Nan Orrock to Receive “Eye on the Prize” Award From AFL-CIO at the 2015 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Annual Awards Banquet

ATLANTA (January 16, 2015) | At the 2015 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Annual Awards Banquet, Sunday, Jan. 18, Sen. Nan Orrock (D-Fulton) will receive the AFL-CIO’s Eye on the Prize Award, given to community leaders who continue to champion the mission of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

“I am humbled to receive the 2015 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Eye on the Prize Award from the AFL-CIO,” said Sen. Orrock. “Working people and their unions carry on the legacy of Dr. King when they organize to gain economic security and dignity on the job. It is a privilege to represent their values and voices in the Georgia General Assembly. Dr. King’s last fight was standing at the side of striking sanitation workers in Memphis. Today we can reflect his ideals and his dream of the beloved community when we support living wages, access to healthcare, strong public schools, and an end to discrimination in all its forms.”

Sen. Orrock founded and co-chairs the Georgia Working Families Legislative Caucus, is past chair of the National Labor Caucus of Legislators, and formerly chaired the Labor and Workforce Development Committee of the National Conference of State Legislatures. Her policy work includes passage of the Georgia Family Medical Leave Act and hate crimes legislation as well as addressing unemployment insurance and injured worker compensation issues.

The AFL-CIO announced that the four 2015 recipients for this prestigious award include Rev. Gerald L. Durley (Faith), Rev. James E. Orange (Community), Walter D. Andrews (Labor), and Sen. Nan Orrock (Government).

The 2015 Dr. Martin Luther King Annual Awards Banquet is an opportunity to honor leaders of the community who have had a profound impact on the lives of others. The award’s banquet is Sunday, January 18, 6 to 9 p.m. at the Westin Peachtree Plaza in Atlanta.
