Senate Impact of Social Media and Artificial Intelligence on Children and Platform Privacy Protection Study Committee to Hold Final Hearing

ATLANTA (December 5, 2025) —On Wednesday, December 10, the Senate Impact of Social Media and Artificial Intelligence on Children and Platform Privacy Protection Study Committee, co-chaired by Sen. Sally Harrell (D–Atlanta) and Sen. Shawn Still (R–Suwanee), will hold its final hearing for the purpose of adopting the committee report.

ABOUT THE MEETING:         

The bipartisan Senate Impact of Social Media and Artificial Intelligence on Children and Platform Privacy Protection Study Committee, created through Senate Resolution 431, has evaluated online platforms’ (i.e., social media, gaming, AI, etc.) impact on children over the course of four months. The study committee partnered with parents, policy experts, representatives from state agencies and private organizations to determine how online protections may be improved and strengthened to ensure safer online experiences. During the final meeting, the study committee will discuss and consider formal recommendations for state action.

ATLANTA (October 2, 2025)—On Wednesday, October 8, the Senate Impact of Social Media and Artificial Intelligence on Children and Platform Privacy Protection Study Committee, co-chaired by Sen. Sally Harrell (D–Atlanta) and Sen. Shawn Still (R–Johns Creek), will hold its third hearing which will focus on the potential harms of Artificial Intelligence and its use in AI-driven chatbots.

The study committee’s first two meetings examined how online platforms can be addictive and harmful to young people, as well as specific state policies that can result in safer online experiences. The third meeting will take a deeper dive into the potential dangers of the use of AI-driven chatbots in online platforms used by minors.

Senator Sally Harrell Announces the New Innovation Commission

ATLANTA (February 16, 2023) | Today, Senator Sally Harrell (D – Atlanta) held a press conference with fellow legislators, self-advocates, concerned members of the public, family members and service providers for adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD). The press conference announced the findings of the Senate Study Committee on People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities and Wavier Plan Access, chaired by Sen. Harrell and Sen. John Albers (R – Roswell), including a creation of the new Innovation Commission for Georgians and the next steps to take to further access to waivers and wages for Georgians with IDDs and their caregivers.

Women’s Legislative Caucus Honors House Speaker Jan Jones as First Female House Speaker in Georgia History

ATLANTA (January 10, 2023) | Yesterday, the Women’s Legislative Caucus hosted an event to recognize House Speaker Jan Jones as the first female House Speaker in Georgia’s history. Women’s Legislative Caucus Co-Chairs, Sen. Sally Harrell (D – Atlanta) and Rep. Kimberly Alexander (D – Atlanta), along with members of the bipartisan bicameral caucus, honored Speaker Jones for breaking barriers for women and girls in Georgia and for her steady leadership after assuming the position during the difficult time following Speaker David Ralston’s unexpected death in November 2022.

Sen. Sally Harrell to Co-Chair Senate Study Committee on Intellectual and Developmental Disability Services

ATLANTA (June 29, 2022) | Sen. Sally Harrell (D – Atlanta) has been appointed by Lt. Governor Geoff Duncan to serve as Co-Chair of the Senate Study Committee on People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities and Waiver Plan Access. The Committee is a result of Senate Resolution 770, sponsored by Sen. Harrell during the 2022 Legislative Session. Sen. Harrell will co-chair the Committee with Sen. John Albers (R – Roswell).
