Senate and House Economic Development Committees Discuss Georgia’s Housing Market

ATLANTA – (December 10, 2008) Co-chairmen State Sen. Chip Pearson (R-Dawsonville) and Rep. Ron Stephens (R-Savannah) held a Joint Economic Development Committee meeting at the Capitol today to discuss the condition of Georgia’s housing industry. Committee members were joined by experts in the economic, building, and real estate industries to focus on how the market is affecting local industries and what can be done at the state level to ease the downturn.

Sen. Chapman Secures Grant for Sewer Improvements in Charlton County

ATLANTA (December 5, 2008) – State Sen. Jeff Chapman (R-Brunswick) has secured $500,000 in equity grant funds for sewer infrastructure improvements to support the expansion of the D. Ray James State Prison in Charlton County. The project will create at least 51 new jobs and generate $34.5 million in private investment.

“I am pleased the expansion of the D. Ray James State Prison will create new job opportunities for county residents since Georgia’s unemployment rate recently hit a 16-year high of 7 percent,” said Sen. Chapman. “I want to thank OneGeorgia Authority for providing our county with this much needed funding, which will help continue making Charlton County a place where people are proud to work and live.”

Joint Legislative Panel on Manufacturing in Georgia Holds Final Meeting

ATLANTA (December 5, 2008) – Co-chairmen Senator Tim Golden and Representative Allen Peake (R-Macon) conducted the final meeting of the Joint Legislative Panel on the Future of Manufacturing in Georgia Thursday, December 4. Kennesaw State University Coles College of Business hosted the meeting which included presentations by technical college educators, manufacturing economists and analysts, and professional representatives of the industry. Presenters addressed the current state of Georgia’s manufacturing industry from business growth and economic perspectives.

Statement from Sen. Seth Harp on Merging Historically Black Colleges

“Merging Historically Black Colleges such as Savannah State University and Albany State College with nearby white-majority schools, Armstrong Atlantic State University and Darton College, will save our taxpayers and the state a significant amount of money. It is not my intention to close any of these institutions, but to strengthen them and make them better. HBCUs should keep their historical significance. This suggestion will require research, but now is the time to examine cost-saving solutions in this tight economic climate.

State Senator Chip Rogers Announces 7th Annual PAGE Contest

WOODSTOCK (December 3, 2008) – State Senator Chip Rogers (R-Woodstock) today announced the details for his annual PAGE Contest. Beginning its seventh year, students between the ages of 12-17 and who live in southern Cherokee County or Northeast Cobb County can enter to serve a day at the State Capitol working as an official PAGE during the 2009 Legislative Session.
