ATLANTA (March 31 2009) – An amendment authored by State Sen. Judson Hill (R-Marietta) that would have provided a wealth of benefits to students, families, and local school system’s budgets was defeated during a Senate debate Monday at the Capitol.

Here in Georgia, we’re making tremendous strides to improve education, provide better access to scholarship opportunities, and the hiring and retention of quality teachers. The Senate has also been focused on ensuring that no other school board loses accreditation. The General Assembly is considering dozens of bills aimed at improving education in the State. Some of our efforts are highlighted below.
Sen. Orrock Honors Pulitzer Prize Winner Natasha Trethewey
ATLANTA (March 27, 2009)— Sen. Nan Orrock (D-Atlanta) and Rep. Stacey Abrams (D-Decatur) honored Pulitzer Prize winner Natasha Tretheway in the Senate and the House Wednesday, March 24th. Tretheway achieved a pinnacle of success in winning the Pulitzer Prize in 2007 for her collection of poetry titled Native Guard. Tretheway is also the recipient of the 2008 Mississippi Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts for Poetry and was named the 2008 Georgia Woman of the Year.
